The story of Changi, Singapore

Nelson, DavidUUUU
Books, Manuscripts
Subject: When Singapore fell to the Imperial Japanese Army in 1942, David Nelson, surveyor and civil engineer with the SIngapore Improvement Trust since 1928 and second-in-command of the Singapore Royal Engineers (Volunteers), was taken prisoner. He was interned in Changi POW Camp throughout the war, during which time he kept a diary recording the fortunes of POWs captured by the IJA and their problems. This book, compiled from the diary, is a personal record of events in and around Changi POW Camp. Dedicated to all those patriots - friend or foe - whose lives were forfeit in this conflict, each serving his own country, it does not attempt to make judgements or state views. Woven into the story is the work of the Bureau of Record and Enquiry, of which David Nelson was in charge. It is believed to be the only record and information centre operating behind the lines in the 'Greater East Asia Co-prosperity Sphere'.
