MacDonald, GregorUUUU
Books, Manuscripts
Subject: Gregor MacDonald, a native of Harris, was recruited into the 4th Territorial Battalion of the Queens Own Cameron Highlanders in 1939. It was not long before the battalion was in the thick of action in France and the retreat and surrender of the 51st Highland Division at St Valery. Now a prisoner of War, Gregor MacDonald decided to make a break at the first opportunity and he succeeded in escaping during the march from the front. From Northern France his route took him to Vichy France, where he worked with the indomitable Scottish Kirk Minister Donald Caskie in Marseilles, onward to Spain and the terrible conditions of the Spanish prison in Zaragosa before his return to Inverness via Gibraltar Gregor MacDonalds courage, mental and physical toughness, makes his account one of the most extraordinary of the Second World War. Written with unassuming modesty he leaves us to imagine the harsh conditions of his journey and the brutal treatment he received both of which he overcame through sheer force of will power It is a gripping story.
