As a child Ruth Manning-Sanders spent her holidays in a farmhouse at the edge of a sea loch in the Scottish highlands. There, when the weather was wet she would listen, enthralled, as the grandmother of the family told her stories. Not made up stories, but those age-old folk tales native to Scotland which are so little known outside that country.
